1 Corinthians 15:53-54a
For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality...
My wife Sherry has a pretty good perspective on things (that is material possessions). She doesn't get too attached. If she's using something -- great, but if not, she's eager to give it away. On the other hand, I have this deep down compulsion to hang on to stuff. After all, there might come a day when it might be needed, right? Yes, except for two issues: first, I can never find it when I need it; and second, things break, wear out, go out of style, and otherwise deteriorate to the point where they aren't useful any longer. In general, things lose their value over time. "Newer and better", and "improved with more functionality, features and performance", are bywords that companies use to encourage us to let go of the old and embrace the new.
But heaven won't be like that at all. (Revelations 21:3-5: "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!'")
In our present existence, everything is subject to change. It's perishable and in a constant state of decay. But in glory everything will be reversed. There won't be anything or anyone that is subject to decay; and no one who will wear out or perish. Everything will be new, and just as perfect for eternity as on the day it was created.
All too often we search this world for the perfect car, home, or clothes. But it's pointless because change is coming. What is perfect today will be out of date tomorrow. Things in this world will always disappoint. But not so the eternal destination our Lord has prepared. Are you living for eternity or the latest fashion trend? Do your priorities need to be adjusted?
