“Perhaps it is Best to Remain Silent”

1 Corinthians 12:10c

...to another prophecy...

Thoughts for Today:

Some people misunderstand the gift of prophecy. They think it is the ability to foretell the future. However, this is not the case. Biblical prophecy is -- by inspiration of the Spirit -- bringing into the open God's heart on a particular subject. Sometimes (not always), it can involve future events. However, they are always words of comfort, edification, or exhortation which are either spoken or written at a time when they are needed most.

Paul provides more information regarding the gift of prophecy in 1 Corinthians 14:3: "But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort." We must also remember, the gift of prophecy and the ministry of a prophet are two completely different things. The simple gift of prophecy, which Paul mentions in our passage today, is not to be a lengthy teaching, rebuke, or warning. That is the role for others to perform in the Church.

Questions to Ponder:

Some people use words to rebuke others (or even vent their own prejudices), then call it "prophecy". Be careful. What words has the Lord given you for the benefit of others? Are they for encouragement, comfort, and strengthening? If not, perhaps it is best to remain silent.
