“Are These Gifts No Longer Required?”

1 Corinthians 13:8

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Thoughts for Today:

Paul succinctly sums up God's kind of love (AGAPE) by saying: "Love never fails." In other words, it will never end, and we will remain walking in God's love throughout eternity. It's one reason why it is so important that the gifts of the Spirit be exercised through God's kind of love. Prophecies will cease, tongues will become silent, and knowledge will pass away. But love will remain forever.

Some people read our passage today and think that the gift of prophecy is no longer needed. I don't think so. Rather, Paul was saying that in heaven, there will be no need for words of exhortation, comfort or edification. Why? Because everyone will be perfectly comforted and edified. No need will exist for exhortation in eternity. The same goes for speaking in tongues and knowledge. When we have glorified bodies, and know all things (even as we are known), there will be no need to speak in tongues because unknown tongues will vanish. And words of knowledge will be unnecessary because we will have perfect knowledge in the presence of Jesus.

In our passage today, Paul is simply contrasting the temporary nature and necessity of these gifts with the permanence of God's love. And by comparison, he demonstrates the relative value of love. It is greater than prophecy, speaking in tongues, and knowledge combined.

Questions to Ponder:

The knowledge that God's love never fails is a great comfort to me. His love remains the same -- on earth and in heaven. His kind of love (AGAPE) never fails. How can we apply this truth today in our relationships? To whom do you need to show God's never ending love through an unconditional act of kindness, generosity or forgiveness?
