“An Instrument of the Lord”

2 Corinthians 1:24

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

Thoughts for Today:

Not long ago, I listened to the testimony of a young woman who celebrated the work a woman's pastor had done in her life. The investment she had made in time, energy, compassion and leadership. My alarm bells began to go off: Who was her faith in -- Jesus or Pastor Chris? Then she concluded her testimony by saying, "I know it is Christ in me that has led to this change. Pastor Chris really helped me to understand how to get Him back in control of my life." I smiled and thought, "Nice job Pastor Chris!"

In the previous verse, Paul made a statement about sparing the Corinthians. This probably led some of his critics to ask, "Who do you think you are? Do you think our faith is conditional upon your approval? Do you think we can't make it without you?" In our passage today, Paul puts it all in the proper perspective. Their faith had to be in God. Jesus was their head, not Paul or anyone else. (1 Corinthians 11:3: "Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.") Paul was simply an instrument of the Lord -- provided by Him to help them to experience the joy available in Christ. Just like Pastor Chris was to the young woman!

Questions to Ponder:

Who has worked with you to help you stand firm in your faith? Have you let them know how much you appreciate their effort in Christ? What kind of an example are you to others? Are you standing firmly? Is your life and joy a testament of your faithfulness? Who are you helping to stand firm?
