2 Corinthians 4:13-14
It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself.
In our passage today, Paul quotes Psalms 116. He is expressing the idea that if we speak what we believe, then the Lord will raise us up and all things will work out for His glory. Just like the Old Testament prophets whose faith caused them to speak out against the ungodliness of the people in their day. (See Hebrews 11.)
In general, I think our words say a lot about our faith, and the Bible warns us to watch what we say. For example:
Colossians 4:6: "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."
1 Peter 1:15 (KJV): "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation."
Ephesians 4:29: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
The Scripture tells us the world was spoken into existence. Therefore, the Word of God framed the world, much like a carpenter frames a house. We also frame the world in which we live by the words we speak. How so? When we speak words of criticism, anger, disappointment, fear, and doubt -- those words become the framework of the home both we and our families occupy. And conversely, when we speak words of faith, hope, love, encouragement, and joy -- even when things aren't going well -- those too will become the qualities of the world we experience. So it all comes down to what we believe -- because what we believe is what we speak.
What have your words recently said about what you believe? Are you joyful, hopeful, encouraged, or something else? How has your family, friends or loved ones been affected by your words? Is it positive or negative? Have your conversations been full of grace?
