“"Reminders of the Work Inside"”

2 Corinthians 4:15-16

All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

Thoughts for Today:

I'm in the process of preparing myself physically for a weeklong ski trip coming up in the next few weeks. I've been running, biking, and climbing staircases, all with the idea of conditioning my legs for the ardors of skiing. As a result I am really sore. I got out of bed at 5:15 this morning and groaned when I stood up. It seems that every muscle in my body aches. Thirty years ago, I would have taken off without a second thought about conditioning. No longer. I am well aware, as Paul says in our passage today, "Outwardly we are wasting away." However, the really good news is, "Inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

I know my physical body is dying -- I feel it every morning -- and every year it gets a little worse. Yet, I also know my inward man is being renewed. How? Because I feel closer to the Lord today than when I first became a Christian. I was young then and had a great deal of enthusiasm (I still do), but I didn't know anything. I wish I knew forty years ago what I know today, I would have been a lot more effective. I often shudder at some of the foolish things I said and did. I may still be a long way from perfection, but Christ has continued His work in me every single day since I first believed. I'm better now than I was. So I don't lose heart no matter how many physical aches and pains I may have -- all are a reminder to me of the work being completed inside!

Questions to Ponder:

We know, as far as our bodies are concerned, as we grow older we begin to wear out. However, with age (provided we are diligent in our faithfulness), we also grow in grace and in the knowledge of Christ. Have you been attentive to your training? Are you a faithful student of the Scriptures? What could be more important than growing in understanding and application of God's Word? (1 Timothy 4:15-16: "Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.")
