“"The Most Magnetic Force in Evangelism"”

2 Corinthians 5:14

For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

Thoughts for Today:

The Christians of Paul's day experienced the love of Christ in a way that was both personal and transformational. It motivated them to take the Gospel of Jesus throughout the world they knew. In fact, more so than any subsequent generation of Christians. And they didn't have the benefits of modern technology. They were simply filled with the full love of Christ.

Paul wrote in Ephesians 3:19: "...and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." I think this follows the same theme as our passage today. It also provides a great explanation for what drives evangelism. My summary would be: "Experiencing the love of Christ causes us to be filled with the fullness of God, which then makes us an almost unstoppable force and irresistible witness to the world." It was how the Gospel spread so quickly. However, it is not our love of Christ that compels, but His love for us.

Today much of the modern church's efforts are placed in technology and technique. However, without the love of Christ as the driving source of our motivation -- ministries, outreaches and missions will eventually become unproductive, wither and die. On the other hand, the missions and ministries of Paul and the other early Christians had a great and lasting impact. Why? Because they were full of and motivated by the love of God. If we as the church want to have a similar impact, then each of us needs to know the love of Christ in an experiential way. It is the love we have personally experienced and are subsequently inspired to share, that is the most compelling and magnetic force in evangelism.

Questions to Ponder:

What motivates you to share the Gospel? Is it guilt, obligation or something else? Is it the love of God? Which do you think will be more effective? What is your story? How has your life been transformed by your relationship with Jesus? Will you share it? Do you love other people -- even those you don’t know? How do you express it? Do you care where others spend eternity?
