“"Reconciliation: Paid in Full"”

2 Corinthians 5:19b

And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Thoughts for Today:

When I got up this morning, I turned on my computer to read the news. But, what I read wasn't prophecy. It was a report of what had already happened. The same thing is true when we conduct ourselves as "ministers of reconciliation" (previous verse 18). We should be reporting the "Good News" as an accomplished fact. Sin has already been dealt with through the person and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

With this in mind, when we talk to people about God's plan for salvation, we should be saying, "Change your thinking and believe the Gospel. That way you can receive and benefit by what has already been done for you." This is the message of reconciliation that Paul speaks about in our passage today.

All of the world's religions and belief systems tell us what we need to do to become "better" (to achieve a higher plain of existence, morality, and the like). But Jesus has already done what humanity needed to do so that we could become reconciled with God. Christ died for our sin to satisfy God's holiness requirement. He alone bore our punishment. And if we accept His gift of salvation, our account with God is completely reconciled. It says "Paid in Full".

Questions to Ponder:

What have been your efforts lately to earn God's love, His forgiveness, or make up for your transgressions? If you said, "Nothing," you answered correctly. There is nothing we can do to earn our place in heaven. Only Jesus meets God's holiness requirement. We must let the Holy Spirit lift us and transform us into the image of Jesus. There are things we can do to honor Him, but the work of justification has already been accomplished. What attitude will you change today to reflect this truth?
