“"Are You Really Separate?"”

2 Corinthians 6:17

Therefore, "Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you."

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, Paul quotes Isaiah 52:11: "Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing! Come out from it and be pure, you who carry the articles of the Lord’s house."
There are many Christians who read these passages and don't think it applies to them. They already consider themselves "separate" because they avoid doing certain "unholy" things. However, they can gossip, have sharp critical tongues, be consumed with the latest fashion, sporting event, or vacation destination, and not realize that what they're doing is unclean. They don't understand that any form of worldliness is the subject of Paul's message.

It is not my job to sit in judgment of the behavior or motivations of anyone -- that is the responsibility of each person in their relationship with the Lord. However, I think it is important for us to individually take a look at the areas in which we might be susceptible to worldliness. Perhaps we've turned a blind eye to our own transgressions? It's so easy to attend church each week, participate in a Bible study, talk about the things of God, claim Jesus as Lord and Savior, say we love Him, consider ourselves separated for Him -- and still not in reality be separate from the world.

Questions to Ponder:

Is there anything in your life that is in contradiction to the Lord's command to: "Come out from them and be separate"? What unclean thing do you continue to touch or participate in? The Lord is speaking to you about these things now. How will you respond? Will it be with joyful obedience?
