“Not Big Enough to Understand”

1 Corinthians 2:9a

However, as it is written: "What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived"...

Thoughts for Today:

Our passage today is taken from Isaiah 64:4. Isaiah had been praying that God might save his people -- have compassion for them while punishing their enemies (the same way He did in Exodus). It is also similar to Jeremiah 3:16 which anticipates the coming of the Messiah. So how do these tie together? Paul is saying that the answer to Isaiah's prayer and the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecy are both found in Jesus. Their words might not have made much sense at the time, but now as we look back, it doesn't seem quite as complicated.

However, in spite of the clarity or insight we may receive from time to time, we have to be careful -- we will never completely understand all of the ways of God. Why? Because comprehension of the divine nature cannot be attained with human faculties. Its full extent can't be seen visually or heard orally -- and even if either were possible -- we wouldn't be able to process the magnitude mentally. We're just not big enough. We're too limited.

Questions to Ponder:

Hopefully today's passage makes us all feel a little smaller. Paul helps us place ourselves in the proper perspective: without God, His Son, and Holy Spirit -- we are lost. Are you fruitlessly searching for answers to your problems? How can we possibly gain understanding or wisdom? For the answer, you will have to wait for our next few passages as Paul reveals God's solution.
